Project
Draft
Draft is a free, MIT-licensed, on-device dictation app for Windows 10 and 11. Hold Right Ctrl, speak, and release: Whisper large-v3-turbo transcribes on your PC and pastes the text at the cursor in any app. Audio is captured only while the key is held and discarded. The installer includes the F16 model, so it works offline. No account, no telemetry, no cloud transcription. An early Apple Silicon macOS preview exists.
Tech Stack
The Challenge
Most dictation tools upload audio to the cloud, require accounts, or track usage. Sensitive work has no trustworthy local option on Windows, and cloud latency breaks the flow.
The Solution
Whisper runs entirely on your PC via transcribe.cpp (Vulkan, CPU fallback). Hold Right Ctrl, speak, release, and the transcript pastes at the cursor in any app, with paragraph breaks at real pauses learned from your speech.
Privacy & Speed
No account, telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, update ping, cloud transcription, or audio upload. History stores text and duration only. A 3 s clip finishes in 239 ms p95 (1.19 s for 60 s), 4.17x faster than the previous build. The same F16 model runs on CPU with identical text.
Open Source
Rust + GPUI + transcribe.cpp. Desktop app at github.com/TirupMehta/draft-rs, site at github.com/TirupMehta/Draft-web. MIT licensed and open to audit.
